A former Pentagon contractor who grew frustrated after losing his security clearance for consuming legally prescribed medical cannabis has been accused of sharing classified documents, reports The Daily Beast. Software engineer James Robert Schweitzer, 58, allegedly shared classified national defence information over a four-year period beginning in 2016. Schweitzer has been charged with malicious mischief and destruction of government property. A security officer allegedly told him that his cannabis consumption would not affect his security clearance, and, for four years, that appeared to be the case. In 2014, however, the U.S. Department of Defense told Schweitzer that his security clearance was being suspended due to his cannabis consumption. The government agency told the contractor that the security officer had provided him with bad information and in August 2014, as he continued to consume medical cannabis, Schweitzer’s clearances were revoked. In response, he began sharing classified information, allegedly keeping documents in a publicly accessible Dropbox folder and even posting U.S. military secrets to LinkedIn. Schweitzer is reported to have sent information to the Pentagon from 2016 to 2018, complaining about the mishandling of sensitive information, in an effort to “bait” the government into responding.
