The National Basketball Association (NBA) will reportedly continue its policy of not testing players for cannabis when the 2020-2021 season begins later this month. Reporter Ben Dowsett broke the news in a series of tweets yesterday. The policy adjustment has not yet been confirmed by the league. Apparently, at least some of that policy adjustment will continue this season. Dowsett noted that the decision was motivated by COVID-19 safety measures and reducing unnecessary contact with players, but with four more states voting to legalize adult-use cannabis last month , and the majority of NBA teams competing in states where recreational or medical cannabis is legal, momentum is building to eliminate cannabis testing as a standard policy. Dowsett’s anonymous source also suggested the league will continue to test ‘for cause’, meaning that if a player is suspected of using cannabis or has tested positive for it in the past, that person may be tested again.
