Using the worm models, researchers found that CBD “did not demonstrate any degree of acute or life-long toxicity or related liabilities at physiological concentrations.” Instead, researchers saw that worms treated with CBD saw their lifespan increase by almost 20 per cent and their “late-stage life activity” increase by more than 200 per cent. “These results serve as the only CBD life-long exposure data in an in vivo model to date, and the absence of long-term toxicity gives us the evidence we need as an industry to continue researching the potential health benefits for the broader application of CBD,” Hunter Land , a senior director at Canopy Growth, says in a statement. The worm models were selected as C. elegans share 60 to 80 per cent of their genes with humans and have a lifespan of just a few weeks. The study, to be published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, was in partnership with NemaLife Inc., a Texas-based biotech company. “These results serve as the only CBD life-long exposure data in an in vivo model to date,” the study concludes. “While further research into the life-long use of CBD should be carried out in mammalian models, the C. elegans model indicates a lack of long-term toxicity at physiologically relevant concentrations,” it adds.
