Colombia: An adult use bill returns.
As Cannabis Wire reported in late June, Colombia came one vote away from legalizing cannabis for adult use. The bill’s author, Rep. Juan Carlos Losada, vowed to push on.
Late last week, he did just that, alongside Sen. María José Pizarro Rodríguez, kicking off the fifth push for adult use legalization in the country with the reintroduction of adult use legislation.
“We made history when we reached the last debate and we are sure that we will obtain its approval in this legislature,” he tweeted.
Albania: Parliament votes to legalize medical cannabis.
On Friday, after a few years of debating the issue, Albania’s parliament voted 69-23 to legalize cannabis production for medical and industrial purposes, with a focus on exports.
Cannabis consumption while pregnant might alter child’s DNA expression.
An NIH-funded study conducted by researchers at the Oregon Health Sciences University found that the “offspring of female nonhuman primates given a cannabis product during pregnancy had changes in their DNA expression like those seen in human children with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.”
The study builds on previous research that suggests that, because THC can cross the placenta, cannabis consumption can affect the fetus.
For the study, researchers gave the macaques cookies that contained THC. They compared the offspring of the macaques given edibles and those that weren’t, and they found “581 methylation differences in DNA from the offspring of macaques fed a daily edible, compared to the offspring of monkeys fed a cookie without THC.”
Further, “many of the placental methylation changes corresponded with those in placentas from a study of human infants later found to have autism spectrum disorder.”
In an announcement about the study, published in Clinical Epigenetics, researcher Lyndsey Shorey-Kendrick noted that, with cannabis, “there is a common perception that it’s completely safe to use.”
“If we’re able to better understand the impacts, we can more effectively communicate the risks to patients and support safer habits during the vulnerable prenatal period,” she said.
