In the weeks before she died of cancer, desperation forced Debra Hutton to break the law.
The Hamilton grandmother used illegal cannabis to control her pain. The day of her funeral saw the change she had been waiting for, as it was announced that medicinal cannabis would be legalised.
But it was too late for Debra, who would cook her illegal cannabis in coconut oil or butter and use it both topically and orally to help manage the pain from her breast cancer, which had metastasised to her lungs and bone.
It’s not that her doctor didn’t prescribe pain relief. It’s just that it knocked her out. Cannabis didn’t.
