Prankster alters iconic Hollywood sign to read ‘Hollyweed’

The new year got off to a blazing start in Los Angeles.
Someone in the first hours of 2017 altered the iconic Hollywood sign to make it read “Hollyweed” — a bit of high-minded hijinks that lit up social media.
“The 1st sun of 2017 rises over #Hollyweed…” Fox Sports 1 reporter Amanda Busick tweeted, adding, “whoever did this, bravo.”
“Shoutout to whoever took the time and effort to make the Hollywood sign say Hollyweed,” another Twitter user wrote.

“Looks like 2017 won’t be so bad after all.”
The pot prankster appeared to have put tarp over the sign’s O’s to make the herbal alteration. It had been changed back to normal before noon.
No one has claimed responsibility for the stunt. The LAPD did not immediately comment, but CBS Los Angeles reported the incident is being investigated as misdemeanor trespassing. Cops told TMZ the vandal is bound to be found, due to surveillance footage.

The smoke joke came at the start of the first year recreational marijuana use will be legal in California, thanks to the voter approval last year of Proposition 64, also known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act.
But it is also an homage to similar stunt from 41 years ago.
On Jan. 1, 1976 — another day California adopted more relaxed marijuana laws — Cal State Northridge arts student Danny Finegood also altered the sign to read “Hollyweed.” The prank earned him an A for a class assignment.
He later returned to change it to “Holywood” and “Ollywood.” He was never charged with a crime, but city officials eventually stepped up security around the state’s most famous sign.
