Neil Young says US citizenship may be delayed over marijuana
Neil Young, the wildly popular Canadian-born rock star said his application for US citizenship has been delayed because he smokes cannabis. Young says that he had passed the citizenship test but was told he had to pass another test to prove “moral character”. Young, who just turned 74 this week, has lived in the US since the mid-1960s. Young has talked about his citizenship test on his website in a post, where he says he was asked many questions to which he answered truthfully. Young said he wants to have the US citizenship in order to vote. However, he was recently informed that to obtain US citizenship he has to pass another test because he uses marijuana. On 19 April, the US Department of Homeland Security had issued a policy alert stating that violating federal controlled substance law, including cannabis, remains a critical bar to establish a good moral character for naturalization, even if the conduct is not an offense under state law.
