NY: Cannabis business zoning map draft for Binghamton released
CANNANNEW REPORT

Last year, recreational cannabis for ages 21 and older was legalized in New York State through the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act. Due to the cannabis industry making its way to New York State, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham said he wants to utilize the city for the opportunity of new jobs and investments in the area in a responsible way. On Thursday morning, a zoning map draft for future cannabis businesses in Binghamton was released. Kraham said these businesses will fit the character of the commercial districts that they locate in and strictly adhere to state law. Businesses will be in places where there is already a large presence of commercial activity. They will not be within 500 feet of a school or 200 feet from places of worship. The proposal will have a 30-day public period. From now until July 2, community members can submit comments on the proposal by email to planning@cityofbinghamton.com. The draft map is subject to change based on New York State regulations and input from the community. The Office of Cannabis Management is expected to release updated draft regulations in the next few weeks, so the city’s draft may change due to that as well. The proposal will also need to go through the required public hearing and approval from Binghamton City Council.
