Las Cruces considering operating hours for cannabis businesses
CANNANNEW REPORT

LAS CRUCES – After several cannabis dispensaries took advantage of the City of Las Cruces’ lack of operating hours to begin selling weed to customers at midnight April 1, the municipality has said it’s now drafting proposed hours to bring before the city council. April 1 marked the first day recreational cannabis could be sold legally in New Mexico. Unlike other major cities in the state, Las Cruces did not set parameters for when cannabis businesses could be open within city limits. After R. Greenleaf Dispensary made headlines by announcing their aim to be the first to sell in the state by opening their Las Cruces shop at 12:01 a.m., at least two other dispensaries followed suit. Haily Vaughan, an owner for Organ Mountain Organix, said she wasn’t aware of the lack of operating hours until the Greenleaf announcement. Vaughan’s business also opened just after midnight Friday. In line with the state’s Cannabis Regulation Act, New Mexico municipalities are allowed local control over the time, place and manner in which cannabis businesses operate. Las Cruces set its local zoning regulations back in September. In response to the midnight openings, senior city planner Katherine Harrison-Rogers said the city’s legal department was drafting an ordinance to set cannabis business operating hours. Harrison-Rogers said the ordinance “will mirror hours for alcohol sales and consumption,” but didn’t expand on specifics. The ordinance is expected to come before the Las Cruces City Council for a vote either this month or in May. Harrison-Rogers didn’t immediately respond for clarification on proposed hours.
