Here’s what they say.. INCBA Files Amicus in Russell v. State of Mississippi A huge thank you to our Amicus Committee, and the incredible attorneys that were able to complete an INCBA Amicus Brief in Russell v. State of Mississippi. Mr. Russell was sentenced to life in prison for possession of just over 1 ounce of marijuana – his legal team, along with support from INCBA, are hoping to overturn that sentence in the Mississippi Supreme Court. In our amicus, INCBA argues that a life sentence without the possibility of parole for a possession crime violates the 8th Amendment under both proportionality standards and evolving standards of decency. A Huge Thank You To: Michelle Mabugat of Greenberg Glusker for taking lead responsibility of the amicus drafting Christopher Clark, a law student at the University of San Francisco for his diligent research and drafting Kevin Frye of Frye Reeves for serving as local counsel and helping INCBA to navigate the Mississippi Court Systems Chelsie Spencer of Ritter Spencer for overseeing the effort and managing the process We are incredibly proud of this effort, and hope that all of our members will become involved in a project that is meaningful to you. Let us know what you’re interested in, and we will do our best to support you!
