We are a relatively small office of three full-time lawyers and one full-time executive legal secretary, and strive for a collaborative working style that fosters harmonious relationships both within the office, and among internal clients and members of the public. The position provides primary legal support and guidance to the City’s Planning Commission, the Community Development Department (Planning Division, Engineering Division, Building Division, Housing/CDBG), and occasionally provides support to other City Departments, particularly on transactional matters. The Assistant City Attorney/Senior Assistant City Attorney is expected to provide legal advice and representation on a wide variety of municipal law topics that will change over time; the specific current responsibilities are expected to include the following: Providing legal advice to the Planning Commission and Planning Division on Development Code interpretation, land use applications and entitlements (with a focus on interpreting and applying state housing legislation) environmental law, telecommunications law, conflict of interest law, and open meeting laws and procedures. Attendance at evening Planning Commission meetings, and other day and evening meetings as needed. Assistance with long-range planning projects, including commercial cannabis licensing and permitting, and the update to the Housing Element. Assistance with oversight of outside counsel in civil litigation. Drafting and reviewing real estate contracts, deeds, ordinances, resolutions, staff reports, municipal policies and procedures, and other legal documents.
