UC San Diego researchers launch first-of-its-kind study on the effects of cannabis on migraines

Researchers at the University of California San Diego are launching a new placebo-controlled study to determine how cannabis affects migraines. Dr. Nathaniel Schuster, lead researcher on the project, told KGTV that it is the first known randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial looking at cannabis as a potentially effective treatment for acute migraines. “We want to know whether it is more effective than placebo, whether it is beneficial for the headache part of migraine, whether it’s helpful for the other parts of migraine,” Schuster said. It’s not clear if the cannabis will be coming from the much-maligned University of Mississippi supply, or from one of the other recently approved growers.  Study participants will use an app to track the effects of four different doses on four separate headaches. Using a vaporizer, participants will not know whether they are inhaling THC, CBD, a combination of the two or a placebo. According to a release from UC San Diego,  the goal is to enroll 90 participants in the study. Allison Knigge, an elementary school teacher, has already signed up. “I would describe my migraines as a piercing pain. It feels like my brain is being squeezed. It causes extreme sensitivity to light and sound and horrible nausea,” said Knigge. “There have been times when I have been at a pain level of six or higher for approximately 25 days out of the month.
