Two soldiers in Trinidad and Tobago were recently arrested for attempting to smuggle contraband, including cannabis, into a maximum-security prison, reports WIC News . Following interviews with police, one of the soldiers has been released while the other remains in custody. But when prison officials searched the items, they found more than food. It is alleged the soldiers were in possession of a duffle bag stuffed with 1.5 kilograms of cannabis. Additionally, 290 packs of cigarettes, 100 lighters, three electronic scales, a cell phone charger and four packs of razor blades were recovered. The two soldiers, who are warrant officers with the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, were detained by the prison officials as police were contacted. In February, a guard with the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service was arrested after popping out for lunch and attempting to smuggle contraband back inside the prison in his takeout container . When the container was scanned, officials found four packages of frozen cannabis, weighing in at about 1.2 kg. He was also carrying a water bottle containing alcohol. The officer, who had nine years of service, was arrested at the scene and charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of prohibited goods. In 2019, Trinidad and Tobago decriminalized personal amounts of cannabis , defined as less than 30 grams.
