The Legal Marijuana NOW Party (LMN) has gained official party status in the state of Nebraska, Secretary of State Bob Evnen’s announced earlier this week. The party, which is focused on legalizing cannabis, can now run candidates and voters can register their support beginning this week, reports KLKN-TV . Activists Mark Elworth Jr. and Krystal Gabel are behind the party and told 3 News Now that they nearly doubled the 6,800 signatures required to gain official party status. In a statement, Elworth and Gabel, who spent four years collecting signatures, said LMN is now looking for pro-cannabis candidates who want to run for office in the 2022 midterm and 2024 general elections. “The Party needs pro-cannabis candidates to run for local, state, and federal offices to better represent cannabis patients, their families, and related businesses in Nebraska,” they said. The party opposes the War on Drugs, and prohibitions on cannabis and hemp, and views the Bill of Rights as its permanent platform. The party added that candidates that might be interested in joining do not need prior political experience. “The Party will educate and assist new candidates in registering for a race, fundraising, filling out paperwork, and campaigning to election day,” they said in a statement. In a 2016 interview with the Omaha World-Herald , Elworth Jr said aside from legalizing cannabis and promoting hemp farming, LMN is focused on increasing voter turnout at the polls.
