Authorities in Taiwan have recovered 1,608 cannabis plants after raiding a greenhouse in the mountainous region of Guanhsi Township, reports Taipei Times . Two men have been detained on suspicion of running the operation. According to Taiwan News , it is the largest seizure of cannabis plants in Taiwan’s history. The total value of the grow is allegedly worth NT$500 million ($22 million). Taiwan News reports that pandemic border controls have led to a shortage of cannabis products and caused prices to spike. A single cannabis plant allegedly has a street value of NT$300,000 ($13,295). The MJIB used drones and officers to monitor the location. The two men who have been detained in relation to the grow are allegedly leaders of a local drug-trafficking ring. The men were observed driving rental trucks between a remote factory in Taoyuan City, where it is believed the cannabis seedlings were located, and the area of the greenhouse. Police also seized indoor grow lights, as well as drying and packaging equipment, at the factory. Additional suspects are being sought as the investigation continues. The seizure apparently tops another record seizure in February, where authorities recovered 1,600 plants. Two men were arrested in connection with that case and were allegedly growing cannabis in 19 rented apartments in Chiayi County and Chiayi City. Cannabis is illegal in Taiwan.
