A Florida high school teacher has been fired for using medical cannabis, reports the Associated Press . Despite the state legalizing medical cannabis five years ago, the Brevard County School Board voted 3-2 to terminate Allison Enright from her position at Space Coast Junior/Senior High School. According to school board general counsel Paul Gibbs, the school district cannot employ teachers who use medical cannabis due to federal regulations that still classify cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance. Allowing teachers to consume cannabis would prevent the school district from receiving some federal grants, Gibbs explained. Enright’s medical cannabis use came to light after she suffered a workplace injury and was required to take a drug test. Enright said she wasn’t aware that she was violating the district’s policy, which notes that teachers can’t use illegal drugs, but does not mention medical cannabis. Enright was previously reliant on opioids to treat several health conditions and says she takes THC capsules twice a day under the guidance of a medical professional. “I want to make it clear: I don’t do drugs,” Enright said during a school district meeting earlier this week. “I don’t smoke pot.
