A police chase in the U.K. came to an unfortunate ending for a retiree, who was unintentionally caught up in the pursuit. The Bristol Post reports that police chased a suspect through Ranjit Lohia’s apartment in October 2019, where they discovered 3.5 grams of cannabis. Police were pursuing a man who assaulted an officer during a drug search and then fled, eventually making his way into Lohia’s apartment. Police forced their way in through the locked door, but the initial suspect was nowhere to be found. Police then focused their attention on possible drugs in Lohio’s home. After spotting the cannabis, Lohia confirmed it was his and for his own personal use. Lohia reportedly has had similar offences in the past, but has been “out of trouble for a good 10 years, to his credit,” prosecutor Paul Kelly told the court. Lohia’s attorney said that while his client had consumed cannabis in the past, he no longer smokes following a heart attack. “He just wants to see the back of it. It was very long ago that this happened and he wants to put it behind him,” said attorney Will Palmer. Lohia was granted a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay £85 ($149) in prosecution costs and a £21 ($36) victim surcharge.
