A retired senior officer with the Royal Australian Navy, Admiral Christopher Barrie, says that psychedelic drugs should be rescheduled to expand research and treatment options, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation  (ABC). Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration is currently contemplating rescheduling psilocybin and MDMA from “prohibited substances” to “controlled drugs.” Both the Australian Medical Association and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists are opposed to the move and would like to see more research first, reports ABC. But we have to be able to do the research to be able to get there,” he said. Barrie noted that rescheduling would facilitate greater research opportunities while still applying “very serious controls over the drugs’ supply and use.” “It would enable them to be used by qualified therapists and experts so we can widen the research base and start to see whether or not it’s possible to go down this route towards better treatments on one hand and, potentially, a cure on the other,” he said.
