A Syracuse University (SU) student claims the school imposed “disproportionate sanctions” after he received a year-long suspension for allegedly delivering cannabis to a friend who was under COVID-19 quarantine. A lawsuit filed in the Onondaga County Supreme Court this week contends the university exercised excessive punishment, according to the Daily Orange. Identified as John Doe in the suit, he is asking the university to annul, void and vacate his suspension, as well as remove the any mention of disciplinary action, from his records. For its part, the university has reportedly denied his accusation of disproportionate sanctions, the publication notes. Hearings, which are confidential, offer an opportunity for “complainants and accused students to present all relevant information and other evidence with regard to alleged violations” of the code. According to the Daily Orange,  the decision to suspend the student was based on records from the university’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) and officer body camera footage. Among others, the code states that certain behaviours or attempted behaviours represent a violation. These include “illegal use or possession of alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia,” and “illegal purchase, distribution, manufacture or sale of alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia,” it states.
