PEI’s chief public health officer is sounding the alarm following an accidental overdose death involving a woman in her 20s who consumed a cannabis product containing fentanyl, methamphetamine and the synthetic drug W-18. Dr. Heather Morrison issued an alert about the product being in PEI late Friday after being informed by the coroner, notes a statement from the province’s Department of Health and Wellness . Investigations are continuing. Dr. Morrison emphasized that anyone using street drugs should try to reduce risks by always having on hand a naloxone kit and telling others it is available free of charge through the Needle Exchange Program, by visiting a program site or as a client of mental health and addiction programs, as well as select community groups. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine , the health department reports, while W-18 is “similar to carfentanil that is reported to be as much as 10,000 times more powerful than morphine.” In 2020, PEI witnessed 17 accidental opioid-related overdoses, nine of which involved fentanyl (compared to five and one, respectively, in 2019 and 24 and zero, respectively, in 2018). With regard to fatal overdoses, there were six opioid-related deaths last year, three of which involved fentanyl.
