Two Canadian residents arriving at Toronto Pearson International Airport, travelling with two children no less, received a not-so-welcome greeting this month when customs officers checking their luggage found a whole lot of drugs. On Feb. 7, the two adults and their two children, aged 10 and 12, arrived at the airport on a flight from Montego Bay in Jamaica. While examining their luggage, officers with Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) found more than $1.6 million worth of cocaine, cannabis and hashish. Specifically, the baggage contained about 7.7 kilograms of cocaine worth an estimated $962,500, 93 kilograms of marijuana valued at $688,940 and 218 grams of hashish worth $4,360, notes a joint CBSA and RCMP statement. “A suitcase concealing cannabis was checked in under the ticket of a 12-year-old child,” the statement reads. The parents of the children, both residents of Brampton, Ont., have each been charged with three counts of importing a controlled substance and three counts of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.
