A new study out of California suggests that teenagers in the state may be more likely to use cannabis in the wake of legalizing recreational weed five years ago. Researchers analyzed data from more than 3 million 7th, 9th and 11th graders in the state who were part of the California Healthy Kids Survey from 2010-2011 through 2018-2019 school years, notes a statement detailing findings of a new report published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs . Among other things, the teens provided information on lifetime and past-30-day cannabis use. Specifically in the California study, researchers saw an 18 per cent hike in the likelihood of lifetime use and a 23 per cent rise in past-30-day use. The apparent increase “is surprising given the steady downward trend in marijuana use during years before legalization,” says lead researcher Mallie Paschall, Ph.D., a senior research scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation.
