A review of 204,780 youths and young adults with mood disorders has found that cannabis use or abuse is significantly associated with a higher risk for non-fatal self-harm and unintentional death. The presence of cannabis use disorder (CUD) “was significantly associated with an increased risk of non-fatal self-harm, all-cause mortality and death by unintentional overdose and homicide,” notes the study , published this week in JAMA Pediatrics . While the findings call “attention to these associations, it is unable to contribute to our understanding of causality or mechanism,” Cynthia Fontanella, an associate professor at Ohio State University, notes in a statement . The team followed for as long as a year from the initial claim until the end of enrolment, the self-harm event or death, taking into account suicide attempts, suicide deaths, all-cause mortality, unintentional overdose, motor vehicle crashes and homicide. CUD was documented in more than 10 per cent of the youths and was significantly associated with older age — 14 to 18 years versus 10 to 13 years —male sex, Black race, bipolar or “other” mood disorders, prior history of self-harm and previous mental health service use, Fontanella reports. Those with mood disorders of greater severity were more inclined to use cannabis than less severely affected youth, the university statement notes.
