Police patrolling the Pacific Highway along Australia’s central east coast were somewhat surprised by what they found after stopping a 76-year-old man at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday morning. The surprise was not the result of the random breath test, why the vehicle was stopped, but because what police call “interaction and conversations” with the driver prompted officers to carry out a vehicle search for prohibited drugs, according to The Echo . The search paid off, with the police reportedly discovering eight garbage bags containing 75 smaller bags, each filled with what they believed to be cannabis, in the boot of the vehicle. The total haul amounted to 36 kilograms. He was refused bail. For NSW, the Drug Misuse and Trafficking Act 1985 notes the cultivation, supply or possession of prohibited plants is an offence, carrying a penalty (on indictment) of 10 years imprisonment and/or 2,000 penalty units where the offence involves less than a commercial quantity and relates to cannabis plant/leaf. When a “large commercial quantity” is involved, however, the penalty is 20 years imprisonment and/or 5,000 penalty units where the offence relates to cannabis plant/leaf, the act states. It’s not an everyday occurrence, but seniors have been cited for growing or transporting cannabis in the past. Last year in Nova Scotia, for example, a 68-year-old driver was stopped for swerving between the shoulder and demarcated lines of Highway 105.…
