Initial plans include four psychedelic therapy rooms. U.K.-based COMPASS will fund studies into psilocybin therapy and other therapies, with the research led by Dr. Scott Aaronson, director of clinical research at Sheppard Pratt. “The Centre of Excellence will enable us to carry out new research in the use of psilocybin therapy for a range of mental illnesses, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, among others,” Dr. Aaronson said, adding that research into psilocybin therapy for severe treatment-resistant depression and for bipolar type II depression is already underway. “We can see the enormous potential that this therapy could have on the lives of millions of people with mental health conditions around the world,” Dr. Aaronson said. A few hours north, in New York, the Mount Sinai Health System is also opening a new centre for psychedelics research, focusing on MDMA, psilocybin and other psychedelic compounds. “The Center for Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Trauma Research pursues a multi-pronged clinical and research approach to discovering novel and more efficacious therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety and other stress-related conditions in the veteran and civilian population,” states a news release from Mount Sinai.
