Nike gives classic sneaker a hemp makeover

Environmentally friendly sneakerheads might be interested in one of the latest offerings from Nike. The industry giant has released hemp edition Air Force 1’s in collaboration with clothing brand Stüssy, reports Hypebeast . Breathable, durable and anti-microbial, some companies, like 8000Kicks , have opted to exclusively produce hemp-based shoes. The company’s origins trace back to a late-night session in Portugal, where a group of friends started talking about making a smokeable shoe. And while 8000Kicks can’t be smoked — “Seriously, please note that smoking the shoe is not a good idea and might get you hospitalized,” notes the company’s FAQ section — buyers can feel good about wearing something made from sustainable materials. If not in the market for shoes, though, the company also sells hemp-based face masks. Compared to cotton and synthetic materials, hemp face masks are resistant to mildew and odour, as well as keep their shape, even after multiple washes. Bruce Linton, the founder of Canopy Growth Corp., told The GrowthOp in November that he’s constantly thinking about the disruptive potential of hemp. “It’s one of these crops that every day I learn new stuff you can make from it,” Linton said.
