A former drugs expert with the Nottinghamshire Police would likely have been dismissed from duty had he not already resigned last November after it was revealed that he sold cannabis-growing equipment through eBay. Under the direction of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), a Nottinghamshire Police investigation into Constable Stuart Clarke kicked off last October following a routine vetting check. Clarke had worked as a drugs expert with the Cannabis Dismantling Team for the last seven years. The probe determined that between January 2019 and September 2020, the 19-year police veteran sold more than 140 hydroponic equipment items, commonly used to grow cannabis, for £10,825 ($18,727) on his personal eBay account. Clarke told investigators that all of the equipment had been purchased legitimately at car boot sales, markets where people gather to sell household and garden goods. Clarke was later released after investigators determined that there was no criminal conduct, but he resigned while still under investigation. Despite that finding, “the force agreed with our finding there was a case to answer for gross misconduct,” the IOPC reports. “The disciplinary panel determined that as a police drugs expert, his behaviour would cause embarrassment to the force and amounted to discreditable conduct.” At a disciplinary hearing on Jan. 5, Clarke was found guilty of gross misconduct.
