A new bill in Michigan will allow veterinarians to legally discuss the use of therapeutic cannabis treatments for pet owners, reports the Detroit Metro Times . Though research around the benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) for animals is ongoing, some early results suggest there could be therapeutic value. Numerous studies have demonstrated that dogs with osteoarthritis benefit from high doses of CBD , leading to “significant” improvements in quality of life . The truth about CBD for your pets The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, has not approved the use of any CBD products in animals, nor are there any legal CBD products on the market for animals in Canada. Under Canada’s Food and Drug Regulations , veterinary health products can only contain parts of the cannabis and hemp plants that are not considered cannabis under the Cannabis Act , which would include hemp-seed derivatives and non-viable seeds. “Mature stalks that do not include any leaves, flowers, seeds or branches, and fibre from such stalks, are also excluded from the Cannabis Act , but may not be used in veterinary health products,” according to Health Canada . Veterinarians in Canada cannot legally prescribe cannabis for medical purposes for their animal patients, according to the College of Veterinarians of Ontario . “There are currently no approved CBD drugs for animals, meaning there is no legal pathway to obtain these products for animals in Canada,” the regulatory body states. If considering giving CBD to a pet, Dr. Sarah Silcox, president of the Canadian Association of Veterinary Cannabinoid Medicine, advises pet owners to speak with their veterinarian first.…
