Unhoused and hungry, Fate Winslow was approached in 2008 by an undercover cop who said he was looking to buy US$20 worth of pot. Winslow, who is Black, would sometimes act as a runner for a white dealer, so he borrowed a bike and returned with two small bags of weed, reports WWL-TV . The marked US$20 bill was later found in the white man’s possession, but he was never arrested. Instead, Winslow, who had three previous non-violent convictions, was taken in and sentenced to life in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. When he was arrested, officers found five dollars in his pocket, money Winslow said he was going to use to buy food.
