A longtime Guelph barber is taking his trimming skills to a new line of work: cannabis retail. It was Bortolon’s son, who works in cannabis cultivation, that first planted the seed about opening a retail store. “He told us about other opportunities, and we pursued them,” Bortolon said. The siblings also received approval from their 91-year-old mother Maria. And though their father, Germano, passed in 2013, they received their retail licence on his birthday. “It was bittersweet on many levels,” Bortolon’s sister, Anna, told Guelph Today . The store is scheduled to open this Friday. According to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, which regulates the province’s cannabis retail operations, there are 16 cannabis shops in Guelph that are either ‘authorized to open’ or are awaiting final approvals. Bortolon said that one of the lessons he learned over his 40-year barbering career is how loyal customers can be. “They kept coming back and helping me,” he said.
