An analysis of Michigan patients who smoked cannabis and had had angioplasty found that they also had a higher risk of stroke following the procedure. In all, 3.5 per cent of the patients reported smoking weed — medical marijuana was legal in the state during the study period, but recreational cannabis was not — within a month of the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedure, which includes angioplasty and stent placement. Though smoking marijuana was associated with a higher risk of stroke after PCI, “this should be interpreted with caution due to the overall very low rate of stroke after PCI,” Dr. Sang Gune Yoo, an internal medicine resident physician at the University of Michigan and the study’s lead author, says in the AAA statement. Comparing cannabis smokers to non-users, the study also found that members of the former group had approximately 50 per cent increased risk of bleeding after PCI and they had a decreased risk of acute kidney injury.
