US|Texas|Six Year Old Texan Girl Becomes First Patient In The State To Receive Legal CBD

Texas has reached a long-overdue medical marijuana milestone.

On February 1st, a six-year-old girl in Central Texas became the first ever Texan patient to receive a marijuana-based medicine (in this case, CBD) for epileptic seizures. The girl’s name has been withheld to protect her privacy.

As per the state’s Compassionate Use Act, CBD oil for intractable epilepsy is the only form of cannabis legally allowed in Texas. According to MySanAntonio, at least 16 physicians are registered with the state to prescribe the medicine.

“For Texans suffering from intractable epilepsy, the wait for medical cannabis is finally over,” said José Hidalgo, founder and CEO of Knox Medical, one of three companies licensed by the state to dispense CBD. “This is a historic day for Texas and we will work tirelessly to uphold the trust and responsibility the state has placed in Knox Medical.”

Efforts to expand the program and decriminalize small amounts of cannabis have failed. However, 83 percent of Texans support some form of marijuana legalization.
